May Is Mental Health Month 2020: Tools 2 Thrive
Since 1949, Mental Health America and our affiliates across the country have led the observance of May is Mental Health Month by reaching millions of people through the media, local events and screenings. We welcome other organizations to join us in spreading the word that mental health is something everyone should care about by using the May is Mental Health Month toolkit materials and conducting awareness activities.
While 1 in 5 people will experience a mental illness during their lifetime, everyone faces challenges in life that can impact their mental health. In 2020, our theme of Tools 2 Thrive will provide practical tools that everyone can use to improve their mental health and increase resiliency regardless of the situations they are dealing with. We now believe that these tools – even those that may need to be adapted for the short term because of COVID-19 and social distancing – will be more useful than ever.

Remember not only children with a diagnosed hearing loss can have difficulty hearing. Students with the common cold or allergies can struggle for a time also. Just keep things visual and face your students at all times during instruction then everyone wins!

Deaf or Hard of Hearing students have a lot going on in their world during classroom instruction. They are paying attention to the teacher, the interpreter, what is on the board, class discussion (looking for the face that is talking), and looking down to take notes. Hearing people can continue to listen and take notes. Deaf and Hard of Hearing students will miss a huge chunk of information when they look down to write. This is why having someone that is reliable taking notes for the deaf/hard of hearing student(s) or share the teacher's notes is crucial to their learning.

Thank you to our administrative professionals on National Administrative Professionals' Day 2020! We would be lost without you!

Having a hard of hearing student in your classroom isn't scary, if you keep these things in mind. Make everything visual, write down important information, repeat directions and the questions from other students during classroom instruction.

Have you ever been frustrated with someone not hearing you? If they have a hearing loss, this diagram will show you why they are not understanding? Please be more patient with them and make sure they can see your face when you are speaking to them.
