It is National Deaf Awareness Week! This week the Teachers of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing at ESU 16 will be sharing some TIPS for when you are visiting with your hard of hearing students, friends or family members.
Friday's Tip Of The Day: Be aware of the fatigue factor. Listening with a hearing loss is quite tiring. As the day wears on, your student, friend or family member may need a break from watching and listening. Accurate listening may wane in the latter part of the school/work day.

Thursday's Tip Of The Day: When you are using a whiteboard or a smart board, best practice for teaching students with hearing loss is to write first, then turn and talk. Using an Elmo is a great option since you are facing the class as you write.
*For Friends for family members, please look at the deaf/hard of hearing person the whole time you are speaking.

Wednesday's Tip Of The Day: Preferential seating may be more than just front of the classroom placement. Depending on whether one or both ears are affected, your student's seat could be almost anywhere in the room! Factors to consider are: closeness to the main speaker, usually the teacher; the availability of speechreading the other students; the proximity to other noise makers such as pencil sharpeners, hallway noise, or fans. Allow the student/person to move to where they can hear the best.

Tuesday's Tip Of The Day: Small group learning sessions can cause a large amount of noise! Consider placing the hard of hearing student's group in a quiet alternate location.
*If it is a friend or family member with a hearing loss, please be considerate that it is very difficult for them to hear in group settings such as restaurants, meetings, and social events.
